Archive Internship* Announcement
Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA) – December 12, 2007

MNA is offering a 15 week grant funded archive internship during the winter/spring of 2007/2008. The internship is offered with on campus housing and a weekly stipend of $200 to offset expenses.

Earliest Start Date: Jan. 15st 2008
Latest Completion Date: July 31st, 2008
Supervisors: Dr. Edward Evans, Librarian and Anne Doyle, Heritage Program Director

Background
Founded in 1928, MNA is a private, nonprofit museum located in Flagstaff, Arizona at the base of the San Francisco Peaks. The campus includes approximately 40 buildings on 200 acres. At 7000’ the area is surrounded by the cool ponderosa pine forests of northernArizona.

One of the Museum’s strong and long-term programs is what is now called the Heritage Program. A warm 4th July weekend in 1930 the Hopi Craftsman Exhibition marked the beginning of what is now the Heritage Program. Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton, one of the co-founders of the Museum, devoted much of her time to
preserving and promoting the arts and culture of the people of Colorado Plateau. One example of her work was the Hopi Silverwork project that started in 1938
ending in 1949 with the formation of the Hopi Silver Craft Cooperative Guild. Over the years the events have had a variety of names but have always focused on
arts and culture. The Heritage Program events reflect MNA’s commitment to the regional voice and culture of the Colorado Plateau through a summer-long
Heritage Program that explores many facets of historic and 21st Century communities. The program goals are:

Heritage Program records for the early years are in good order but for a variety of reasons post 1980 records have not been entered into the Institutional Archives.
As a result these later Heritage Program records have not been maintained. Based on a recent survey by an archives consultant, MNA knows there are
approximately 76 liner feet of Heritage Program records in four locations on the research campus. It is imperative that MNA gain control over the
intellectual content of the post 1980 Heritage Program records since research requests are received by the library/archives for information that most likely resides
within the many boxes of unorganized post 1980 Heritage Program records.

The Archive Project
The intern will research the organization and content of the pre1980 Heritage Program records in the Institutional Archives to help in organizing the post 1980
records. Organization will occur in consultation with the Heritage Program Director and Librarians. The intern will also remove metal staples/paperclips and place historically important materials into archival quality folders and boxes before they are placed in the archives vault. The final activity that the intern will complete is
the creation of a basic finding aid for the folders. The project will allow us to gain physical and intellectual control of the Heritage Program materials for its entire
history. The Librarians will work with the Heritage Program Director to create written protocols for adding new Heritage Program records to Institutional Archives.
