Office of Treaty Affairs

The Office of Treaty Affairs, an office within the U.S. Department of
State's Office of the Legal Adviser, is pleased to offer a Summer
Archive Internship for graduate students. This internship is designed to
provide a summer work experience for a graduate student interested in
pursuing an archival or records management career. The intern will
participate in a large-scale arrangement project, assist with
development of finding guides, and support technical issues.

Office Information: The Office of Treaty Affairs serves as the principal
U.S. government repository for U.S. treaties and other international
agreements. In addition, the treaty office is also the depositary for
over 200 multilateral treaties, such as NATO, the Antarctic Treaty, and
the Biological Weapons Convention. The treaty office advises other
offices under the Legal Adviser, other Department bureaus, and other
government agencies on all aspects of treaty law and procedure,
including constitutional questions, and provides guidance and assistance
in the authorization, drafting, negotiation, application, and
interpretation of hundreds of agreements annually. It also responds to
treaty-related inquiries from Congress, academia, members of the public,
and officials of foreign governments and international organizations.

More information about the Office of Treaty Affairs can be found at

Internship Summary: The 2008 Summer Archive Intern will assist the
Treaty Archivist on an arrangement and description project for the
Treaty Background Files housed within the office's in-house archive
collection. Following an orientation period, the intern will also
provide assistance in developing and updating index and reference items
for the collection. In addition, the intern will assist in scanning
original treaties and agreements into the Treaty Information and
Management System (TIMS), transferring electronic records into the
system, and conducting metadata clean-up.

degree in one of the following fields: archival administration; library
or information studies; American history; or American studies.
Demonstrated interest in the archival or records management profession.
Applicants must be detail-oriented, have good organization and

beginning of June. Internship will last for 8 to 12 weeks, with a
flexible 20 hour (minimum) week schedule. The internship is unpaid,
however, work hours can be used toward course credit for independent
