5 SI students present posters at national SAA conference in Austin
5 students and newly-graduated alumni of the School of Information have been chosen to present posters at the annual national conference of the Society of American Archivists. All 5 SI-ers will be heading down to Austin, Texas, the site of this year's conference, and will present on the following topics:
Tiffany Chao - Preserving the Present: A Community Perspective
Malisa Lewis - Pressed at the Press: Digital Preservation at a University Press
Lance Stuchell - Disaster Planning for a Digital Repository
Abstract: The goal of this project was to create a comprehensive disaster-planning program for the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), a digital archive of social science research located at the University of Michigan. The project entailed an environmental scan of disaster-planning best practices, the adaptation of those practices for use in a digital repository, and the creation of resources that facilitate collaboration and disaster planning and preparedness at ICPSR.
Sally Vermaaten - Putting Preservation Metadata Into Action: Developing Tools to Help Users Implement PREMIS
Abstract: It is now clear that digital information represents an important and ever-growing piece of our cultural knowledge and heritage and that some digital information needs to be preserved over the long-term. PREMIS has addressed a critical piece of this large challenge by defining semantic units (metadata elements) that are necessary to record in order to preserve digital objects. However, there are barriers to implementing PREMIS. My poster will present the results of a summer internship with Brian Lavoie, Senior Research Scientist at OCLC Research, in which I will assist in the development of tools that will help users implement PREMIS including working on issues of conformance, workflows, registries, and automatic capture of metadata.

Abstract: This poster will demonstrate the process of examining the collections of the museum for digitization, and offer the most suitable way of digitizing collections that meets not only the best practices and standards but also the institutional expectations while making digitized materials accessible and searchable to users.
