Canton Historical Society Volunteer Opportunity
Submitted by jjyork on Fri, 2008-01-11 18:28.The Canton Historical Society is a local organization dedicated to preserving the history of the city of Canton, Michigan. The society has an archive with a plethora of information. This includes paper records, photographs, audio/video oral histories, an interesting collection of historical books, maps, and many other objects dating back from the 1700's. Students will start by arranging and describing the collections at CHS, with some digitization and preservation work possible. Please contact David Zande (dmzande@umich.edu) for more information.

David will be working at the Canton Historical Society this Saturday, February 16 at 10am. I'll be working until 1pm. I think the goal for Saturday will be to finish up the high level appraisal of the rest of the collection, the top three shelves. If we finish that, we can look at creating several record series that will work for Liz at CHS. Let me know if you are interested in attending this weekend (Ann Arbor students may want to use the SAA website or the CTools site to set up a ride. I'll be coming from Detroit, so I won't be able to drive this time). I hope to see you there.

Submitted by dmzande on Wed, 2008-01-23 16:34.I have scheduled work at the Canton Historical Society for Saturday, February 2 @ 10am and returning at 1pm. We will leave the West Hall parking lot 9:30am and commute to Canton. If it is easier for you to meet us in Canton, that's fine. Sign up here so we can figure out how people plan on working and how many cars we will need. I think I can drive 6 so that should help. Hope to see you there. And it sounds like they will be providing food! Cheers, David

They have a varied collection including paper, photos, oral histories on audio and videocassette, a book collection with copies from as early as the 1730's, maps (large and small), and many physical objects. To start they would like to inventory and arrange the collection to get a better understanding of what they have at the archive. From there, digitization of many of the photographs, maps, and oral histories is possible. They would definitely be interested in having some work with them on a more permanent basis.
