The Canton Historical Society is a local organization dedicated to preserving the history of the city of Canton, Michigan. The society has an archive with a plethora of information. This includes paper records, photographs, audio/video oral histories, an interesting collection of historical books, maps, and many other objects dating back from the 1700's. Students will start by arranging and describing the collections at CHS, with some digitization and preservation work possible. Please contact David Zande (dmzande@umich.edu) for more information.

Ann Arbor Civic Theatre Archives Volunteer Opportunity

The Ann Arbor Civic Theatre (A2CT) is a primarily volunteer-based organization that has been around for over 78 years. It has archives of posters, announcements, and photographs of its productions ranging back to the 1950s.

I have scheduled work at the Canton Historical Society for Saturday, February 2 @ 10am and returning at 1pm. We will leave the West Hall parking lot 9:30am and commute to Canton. If it is easier for you to meet us in Canton, that's fine. Sign up here so we can figure out how people plan on working and how many cars we will need. I think I can drive 6 so that should help. I met with the Canton Historical Society yesterday. They have a varied collection including paper, photos, oral histories on audio and videocassette, a book collection with copies from as early as the 1730's, maps (large and small), and many physical objects. To start they would like to inventory and arrange the collection to get a better understanding of what they have at the archive. From there, digitization of many of the photographs, maps, and oral histories is possible. They would definitely be interested in having some work with them on a more permanent basis.

The A2CT went really well today. Ten people came including David
Wallace and myself. David was very helpful in overseeing what we
should be doing from the beginning. It was great to have him there
and he is very interested in helping with this project and others.

We managed to take many of the boxes down and put them into basic
series. All of the AV materials are also sorted off to the one side.
Only a few people were able to be in the loft, but since we moved
boxes down to the floor more people were able to work.
